Winter Costs Up for PennDOT and Local Governments

Posted: Updated:

Today's bitter cold is yet another challenge for local road crews. It has been a  tough winter for them. And an expensive one for PennDOT and local governments.

The combination of heavy snow and cold is really putting a strain on budgets. Crews are suing more salt, anti-skid and liquid brine. And they are working more overtime.

Erie County PennDOT Manager Bob Miller said, "It has been a severe winter to date. Temperatures especially this past week, back with the polar vortex revisiting us, it has been a challenge."

Millcreek Supervisor Brian McGrath said, "We're having to put down quite a bit of salt. We're using anti-skid, and the overtime is pretty extreme also. It has been a bad winter. And we are only in January."

A big problem has been the number of days it has snowed. Even a few inches means crews have to spread salt.
