The Big Game Day Means a Huge Day for Food Sales

Posted: Updated:

Of course it's about football, but Super Bowl Sunday is also about the food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports the day as the second highest day for eating - just after Thanksgiving.

It's also the busiest day for pizza sales. Jeff Walter, manager of Erie's Pizza Hut on Peach Street, has been preparing his staff for two weeks.

"All the festivities will start, a lot of veterans will come in, then we'll slow down around 7 or 8 o'clock. Then halftime hits and it'll kick up again. This is our Mother's Day, as you would call it," Walter said.

Americans eat about 4.5 million pizzas on Super Bowl Sunday, and pizza franchises will sell double a usual day's orders.

"We've been extremely busy, we've been having phones ringing non-stop," said Molly McNaughton, a shift leader at Hungry Howies on 12th Street.

Then of course, there's the wings. Americans will eat 1.25 billion chicken wings over the super bowl weekend, and grocery stores like Wegman's are feeding the people what they want.

"Our prepared foods team was here very late, past 10 o'clock getting ready for today. There's customers constantly coming in, we've got our wing bar ready with chicken wings, boneless wings, onion rings," said Chelsea Coverdale, a front-end manager at Wegmans.

The store rolled out a "monster" wing bar with more than 20 different flavors, though the ever-favorite is the classic buffalo chicken.

Grocery shoppers will taper out right before kickoff. But pizza orders will continue throughout the game. And studies show that the closer the game, the higher rate of deliveries.

Food, playing a major role in a game that's at the forefront of American sports.
