Hypothermia Likely In Gannon Student Death

Posted: Updated:

Preliminary autopsy results point to hypothermia as the likely cause of death for a 21-year-old Gannon University student found outdoors Saturday in cardiac arrest. University officials  identify the student as Abbie Brynda, a nursing major from Zelienople near Pittsburgh.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said that a formal ruling on the cause and manner of death is pending toxicology results.  But after the autopsy completed on Sunday Cook told WICU/WSEE that there are no signs of foul play, and the findings so far are compatible with hypothermia.

Brynda was found about 4:00 PM Saturday in between the former Erie firehouse and another building on the north side of West 12th Street near Sassafras. Those who found her say she was extremely cold and without a pulse. Witness Ken Richardson said they started CPR, before rescuers arrived.

The student was rushed to UPMC Hamot, where she was pronounced dead a short time later,  in spite of efforts to revive and warm her.

Police report that Abbie Brynda was last seen about 1:30 AM Saturday, at a party right near where she was found.  Her sister, other relatives and Gannon students had been searching for her. Officers tell WICU/WSEE the relatives filed an official missing persons report with Erie police just a half hour before she was found, in cardiac arrest.
