Central Tech Students Compete in PA Business Week

Posted: Updated:

One-hundred Central Tech juniors competed in a trade show on Tuesday, presenting their own products and companies.

It's the grand finale of Pennsylvania Business Week, which aims to teach students how the American economy works while they develop real-world skills.

From sales pitches to advertising jingles, the student teams at Central Tech have prepared every business aspect behind their products.

"Today they're demonstrating all the products that they've designed and doing their sales pitches. It's a great experience to see what the real business world is like," said Mathew Pundt, Director of Career and Technology Education at Central Tech.

"We had to find a way to make our target audience want our product and we had to find a way to make our commercial appealing," said Jordan Williams, whose team developed a GPS device that linked with an app for your phone.

Six teams of 15-20 students were asked either to develop an innovative GPS product, or camera product. Then instead of regular class, the teams worked on product development and business organization for a week, with the help of an advisor from the Erie community.

"Our GPS is not your ordinary GPS, it's actually quite mind-blowing," said Jaida Dixon, a junior. It's only $45 and 5 percent of all proceeds go towards the Kanzius Foundation," she added.

Nargila Papaladze, on the same team as Dixon, found the most challenging aspect of the project to be managing the finances.

"We had to decide how much to put towards advertising, outreach, product design," she said. "We didn't how the other teams were spending their budgets."

Economics is not required curriculum for Pennsylvania schools, so business week aims to teach students supply and demand, and the skills necessary to succeed in the business world.

"No matter what, it takes a team to build a company," said Dimitri Allison, a junior whose team developed a solar-powered durable camera.

"You have to come together as one and can't go lone wolf," agreed Nathan Fuhrman, of the same team.

One incentive for the teams to beat out the competition also draws a parallel with the real world: profits. Each member of the winning team earns $100 in cash.

The week has seven opened the eyes of some students to future career possibilities.

"I hope to go on later in life and hope to go into a business field," Fuhrman said.

Business week has been presented to more than 13,000 students across five Western Pennsylvania counties.
