Local Author Pushes for Social Change

Posted: Updated:

Erie author and Edinboro University alum, Rob Kocur, is once again on the move to spark change. He has fought to end the stereotypes of people with disabilities. Now, he's working to end domestic violence and abuse.

Kocur is no stranger to adversity.

"My mother experienced physical abuse at the hand of my father, my sister experienced physical abuse, we all experienced emotional and psychological abuse," Kocur said.

"I had an injury at age 19, I broke my neck at a football game and I've been in a wheelchair ever since," he said. Then his mother died from a massive heart attack just eight months later, leaving Kocur to live with his father alone.

But he hasn't let the challenges stop him. He works as play write and self-published a memoir, "The Long Journey Home." He hopes to inspire with his book.

"You don't have to be a prisoner of your past. Even though you may have the scars for life, though things that have affected you negatively will stay with you, you can still become a fully functioning member of society," he said.

Kocur founded the "United We Stand Theater Troupe" in 2001, a group that encourages people with to get involved in performance arts.

Now he's taking on a new cause.

"Let's do everything we possibly can to raise awareness that you don't have to tolerate abuse of any kind," Kocur said.

He's working on a charity event to raise funds for  "The Joyful Heart Foundation," a group with the goal of ending abuse of all forms.

"Even in 2014, emotional and psychological abuse are still viewed with a skeptical eye.  If it's not clear cut in people's eyes, it's not really abuse. And I wanted to bring awareness to that too," Kocur said.

It's also a personal fight.

"I knew there was going to be a day I was going to be liberated. I had faith in God that this wasn't going to keep going forever. And that's when Edinboro came into my life.

Kocur is still in the planning phase for the charity event for "Joyful Heart," and is seeking help and support from the community. To lend a hand, you can reach Kocur at 814-490-7933.
