Penn State Competition Raises Thousands for Cancer

Posted: Updated:

There was plenty to cheer about Saturday afternoon at the 13th annual Spirit Against Cancer Dance and Cheer competition at Penn State Behrend.

This year, the competition raised over $5,000 for the John Kanzuis Cancer Research Foundation.  Over the past 13 years, the competition has raised a total of $100,000 for cancer research.

The day honors the memory of Dance Coach, Becky Hubler Decker, who lost her battle with cancer, back in 2001.

"Becky would be amazed by this," said her best friend, Heather Celio.  "She was a very giving and caring person.  She was always involved in a million different things but dance and cheer were big parts of her life.  I think she would be thrilled by this."

Hundreds of girls from over 60 teams attended Saturday's competition.

Girls on the Penn State Cheer squad say it feels great to have fun and raise money while remembering Becky.

"This is just a really great way that we keep her name around and we raise awareness and money for cancer research so we can fight this terrible disease," said Penn State sophomore, Erin Kyle.

Penn State Behrend Director of Athletics, Brian Streeter, says teams come from all over to support the cause.

"Some come up from Pittsburgh and other different areas of the state.  They recognize this is a great dance and cheer competition to come to, for a good cause," said Streeter.

"The cheerleaders are amazing, everyone is so nice," said Penn State freshman cheerleader, Aary Fontz.  "The fact that we're raising money is a godsend; it's lovely."

The girls say it doesn't matter who wins; the day is all about helping others and raising money.

Storms swept through northwestern Pennsylvania Sunday evening packing high winds and a lot of lightning strikes. One cell seemed to stall along the Crawford -Mercer County line. We found trees and power lines down along Route 18 in West Fallowfield Township. There was also storm damage left behind in the McMaster Road area, near the communities of Atlantic and Adamsville. If those names sound familiar, that's because it is the same general area where the 1985 tornados hit. We also found high ...More >>
