Public Reacts to Bayfront Hotel Development

Posted: Updated:

All eyes are on Erie County Council this week as they discuss the funding of two separate hotel development plans for the Bayfront.

Scott Enterprises has been using commercials to lobby the public to side with them.

An excerpt from a Scott Enterprises commercial states, "The Bayfront Convention Center and the Sheraton Hotel were built with one hundred million guaranteed by taxpayers."

They oppose public financial support for a second Convention Center Hotel on the bay, that would keep it off the tax rolls.

Both the Convention Center Authority and Scott Enterprises are making their positions clear.  Each party hopes the public's opinion will influence County Council's vote, at their Tuesday night meeting.

We heard some of those opinions on Sunday, at the Bayfront Convention Center.

"Nick Scott's come up with a good plan, let his firm go ahead and develop it and leave it at that," said Patricia of Edinboro.

Pat Brickner, also of Edinboro, said, "I'm against using taxpayer money for the hotels.  I would, however, like to see a boardwalk down here where every day people can come down and spend more time."

The matter is important for newly elected County Councilman, Jay Breneman.  Breneman said on Thursday he won't vote to back the hotel loans without something in return.

"Under no circumstances will I approve the Convention Center authority bond guarantee request without a satisfactory PILOT agreement with Erie County," said Breneman.

County Executive, Kathy Dahlkemper brought all parties to the table on Friday.  They're expected to keep talking on Monday, in efforts to forge a solution that keeps both projects on track and everybody happy.

County Council is scheduled to vote on Tuesday.
