Ice Castle Construction in Mayville

Posted: Updated:

The centerpiece of the annual winter festival in Mayville, New York is nearly complete. Volunteers are now putting the finishing touches on a giant ice castle. The festival begins Friday night.

Now some years, mild weather means the castle can't be built. But this year, that is not a problem.

Volunteers have cut about 1300 giant blocks of ice from nearby Chautauqua Lake. Crews are now using snow and slush to fill in the gaps between the blocks.

Construction Supervisor Dave Douglas said, "The cold temperatures and size of the blocks let us finish this way ahead of schedule."

The 28th annual festival is a big boost to local businesses.

Restaurant and Hotel owner Rick Newell said, "It is huge. All the hotels in town are full, all the rooms are rented. It is a huge weekend."

Business owners say the festival attracts visitors from a wide area including Erie, Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh.
