Searching for Sand Money

Posted: Updated:

It may be mid winter, but there is already concern about the lack of any federal funds for sand replenishment at Presque Isle.

There was little erosion last year. So about $1.3 million is leftover for sand this year. But that is far less than is needed in a normal year.

Park Manager Harry Leslie said, "If everything this year is the same as last year, we will be fine. But that is not the way Lake Erie works."

Local tourism officials are worried that if new funding is not found, the beaches might not be in to shape at Erie's top tourist attraction.

John Oliver of VisitErie said, "Getting that sand and having enough sand to keep the beaches to what visitors expect is critical. It is a major economic driver for our tourism industry here."

Both of Pennsylvania's U.S. Senators, Bob Casey and Pat Toomey as well as Congressman Mike Kelly are now pushing for new sand funding for the park.
