PRESQUE ISLE STATE PARK - If you saw people golfing out on the frozen Presque Isle Bay, Sunday afternoon, your eyes were not deceiving you. The 4th annual Joe Root Frostbite Open kicked off at 9 a.m.
"We've lost a few golf balls, but it was all in the name of fun," said golfer, Carolyn Kiel.
Losing golf balls in the snow was a trend for many golfers at the Frostbite Open.
Participants played nine holes alongside ice fishermen and cross country skiers. The ice is up to a foot thick, in some areas.
Presque Isle Environmental Education specialist, Brian Gula, represented Joe Root. Gula said this is the first time in two years they've been able to actually play golf on the bay.
"The last few years we've had to do it on the beach due to a lack of icy conditions, but of course, this winter we've had lots of zero and below zero temperatures and that's just perfect for ice-making weather," he said.
Even those who have participated in the past, said putting in the snow is hard to perfect.
"We've had some great drives, sometimes over the pins, sometimes we're playing the wrong hole," said Kiel.
The event is called the Frostbite Open for a reason; but the cold temperatures didn't stop golfers from all over the country from coming out to play.
John and Alonna Tedesco traveled all the way from Dade City, Florida.
"We're having a great time, it's like playing in the sand traps in Florida," said Alonna.
28 teams participated in what organizers say is the best turnout in years. All money raised on Sunday will go towards projects at Presque Isle State Park.
