Union Employees at GE Donate $15K to Red Cross

Posted: Updated:

Erie's Red Cross got a huge helping hand on Tuesday from the union employees working at General Electric.

The Employee Community Services Fund at GE made a $15,000 donation to the local Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The money was raised through weekly payroll deductions of union employees who choose to participate, about 70 percent of the employees.

After noticing the string of fires this year, the Employee Community Services Fund decided to reach out.

"We picked the Red Cross because we kept reading about the fires and hearing about the fires," said Rob Celeski, chairman of the ECSF.

Celeski said the fund is a good way to really give local charities a boost because it motivates employees to donate - and even small donations can add up quickly.

"Each person that gives, it's not going to break your bank. You give a couple of dollars per week or whatever it may be, and therefore, we're able to give to different places like this in need," Celeski said.

The Red Cross relies on donations to keep running. Their funds were severely depleted after helping 30 families affected by fire just this year, making it the busiest month and a half consecutive since the Erie chapter opened.
