The coroner has ruled an Erie man died of multiple blunt force trauma, after being hit by a car Thursday night. That car fled the scene, and police are still looking for the driver.
Erie police say whoever hit and killed this man, very likely knew what they did, but left the scene anyway. And now they're hoping tips can lead to that driver.
Police say the victim, identified by Coroner Lyell Cook as 51-year-old Emory Black, was trying to cross Liberty street, near 15th, when he was hit by a car. After the impact, that car just kept going. It happened around 7:30 Thursday night.
When emergency crews got there, Black's condition was grave, he was unconscious on the ground. Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, where he died around 5:00 Friday morning, during treatment. Erie police say the driver had to have known he hit black.
Is it a case where the driver may not have known? "No, no. This individual weighed over 200 pounds," said Erie Police Corporal Anthony Letkiewicz. "And based upon where he came to rest, the individual knew he had sit somebody or something large," Cpl. Letkiewicz added.
Police were able to recover some surveillance video of the hitting vehicle. It's the red car at the top of the video. Police are hoping it can help lead to the driver. They say the hitting vehicle is red or maroon 4-door sedan, with damage to the front or front right of the vehicle. Anyone with a possible tip is asked to call police at 870-1171 or 870-1120.
