Pittsburgh Steeler Surprises Local Middle School Students

Posted: Updated:

Students at Woodrow Wilson Middle School got a big surprise Friday afternoon, when a Pittsburgh Steeler walked into the school's auditorium.

Kelvin Beachum, number 68, visited the school to present a $2,500 check to students and faculty.

The students won Quaker Oats "Fuel Up To Play 60" video contest.  The contest encourages kids to show off their commitment to getting active for at least 60 minutes every day.

Beachum spoke to students about healthy eating habits and getting enough exercise.

"Its unexplainable.  I was really happy when I heard I got to meet Kelvin Beachum, I mean, I'm a big Steeler fan," said 7th grade student, Ethan Blasford.

"I really enjoy it, I really enjoy talking to the kids about healthy eating because as a professional athlete, I need to make sure that I'm eating healthy to perform at my highest level," said Beachum.  "To be able to make sure these kids have this at an early is something I wish I would have had at an early age."

Beachum stuck around after the assembly to take pictures with the kids and sign autographs.

Woodrow Wilson Middle School is one of ten National first prize "Quaker make your move" schools.
