Former Millcreek Dentist Appears In Court On Drug Charges

Posted: Updated:

A former local dentist made his way into a courtroom Tuesday, to face a list of drug charges.
The hearing ended with just one charge standing.

Police say a local dentist broke the law, when he got prescription pain medications for his own personal use.
After a brief court appearance Tuesday afternoon, 52-year old Doctor William Kevin Mahoney waived his preliminary hearing.
He was facing 8 charges of illegally obtaining a controlled substance. Tuesday, after a deal with prosecutors, that was dropped down to just one count.
It all came to light after a police raid at his office on Caughey Road in Millcreek, last November.
Investigators say Dr. Mahoney obtained pain medications, saying they were for his patients, then used them himself.
After his arrest last year, Mahoney posted bond, and told authorities he was headed to a rehab  facility in Chicago.

His lawyer Tuesday told reporters after the hearing that Mahoney completed rehab on his own, and has surrendered his license.
Mahoney is facing a maximum of 15 years in jail and a $250,000 fine for the one charge he's now facing.
No sentencing date has been set.
