Family of Five Displaced after Erie House Fire

Posted: Updated:

It was a regular Monday when 16-year-old Raven Moor came home from school. But then she went  inside and realized her house at 1818 McClelland Ave was on fire.

"I went up in my room and I saw smoke coming out of the walls and then I lifted my window and I saw fire from under my window," Moore said.

She made the 9-1-1 call just after 4:30 pm.

Then her mom returned to find flames erupting from the roof.

The Erie Fire Department told the family the cause may have been electrical, but are still investigating.

"It appeared to be up in the wall and in the attic area of the house, so we had to do extensive pulling of the ceiling and the walls to get to the fire," said Mike Fahey, Deputy Fire Chief of Erie.

The fire started in the walls of a second floor bedroom, causing heavy damage there.

"I'm just upset that everything is gone. All of my stuff, everything," Moore said. "I had stuff from my grandmother who passed away, and everything's just gone," she said.

But the family of five is grateful that no one was injured. One of the family members is wheelchair-bound.

"My husband is sick on dialysis, and it was in the area where our bedroom was. So you know, he probably would have died. And the kids were at school so we're just lucky that no one was home at the time," said Jennifer Holmes, one of the home owners.

"We're happy that he wasn't there because we don't think that we would've gotten him out fast enough. We're just thankful," Moore said.

The house is salvageable, though unlivable for now. Erie's Red Cross is assisting the family.
