Erie County is taking a new approach in the battle against heroin addiction.
Several high-level county and state officials are in town this afternoon, for the inaugural meeting of the "Erie County Heroin Overdose Community Awareness Task Force."
The group is looking to create new ways to treat addicts and inform the public about the deadly effects of this drug, that has become an epidemic in our area.
Today, State Secretary of the Department of Drug and Alcohol tells us just how big this issue has become:
" right now drug overdoses are exceeding car crashes as the leading cause of accidental death in America. In Erie county is suffering just like any other community."
As well as the County Director of the Department of Human Services, John Dimattio:
"so we really want to look at it as a broad based topic and get input from everybody across the board, so when we are talking about it we don't leave anybody out"
