Chautauqua County is still reeling from this week's decision by ConAgra to close two facilities.
More than 400 workers will lose their jobs when the Carriage House food processing plant in Fredonia and warehouse in Dunkirk close early in 2015. The facility makes private label foods including peanut butter, salad dressings, jams and jellies.
The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce says the local facility was profitable. But ConAgra said it can increase efficiency by moving operations elsewhere.
In Fredonia, many small businesses worry about the ripple effect, the loss of other jobs and tax revenue. And the direct impact on their bottom line when more than 400 workers are no longer collecting paychecks.
Hair Salon Co-Owner Rita Canfora said, "We are worried what is going to happen to our business, and the community? It is going to snowball."
Florist Charlotte Herlong said, "Business thrives on people doing well. And when they are not doing well it makes it difficult."
