Ice Jam Danger Eases

Posted: Updated:

People living close to Elk Creek in Girard are relieved. The danger from a large ice jam has eased. The water is now flowing around Legion Park near Route 20.

Most of the ice is now along the banks of the stream. In some spots, giant chunks of ice have been pushed up to 100 yards away from the creek.

Officials are warning fishermen downstream to be cautious. But the immediate danger has passed.

Waterways Conservation Office Brook Tolbert said, "The danger has significantly decreased with the channel opening up. That will allow this ice formation to slowly melt and hopefully we won't see any large chunks just rushing down the stream."

Some Girard residents say this was the largest ice jam they had ever seen in that part of Elk Creek.
