Edinboro Loses in Elite 8 Tournament

Posted: Updated:

The stage is now set for the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Elite 8 tournament.

But, Edinboro University will not be playing.  The team lost to Cal Poly Pomona in the quarterfinals.  Despite losing, fans of the team are calling this season a huge success.

"It's really nice for our school," said Edinboro fan Zach Baumgartner.  "It brings a lot of attention to our area.  We bring in more recruits, and we end up here."

The team played hard in an attempt for a shot at the title, but eventually fell to Cal Poly Pomona 79 to 61.

The last time the Edinboro women's team made it to the Elite 8 was back in 1997, and the team beat Gannon four times this year to represent the Atlantic Region.

So despite the outcome, fans we spoke with, are proud of the team.

"They come together, they believe in one another, and for the core group of fans that show up every game, we still believe in each other," said Jason Hahr.  "And we still believe in the team."

The tournament continues Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
