Erie City Council today went on record opposing a plan to close the Pennsylvania Civil Service Exam Center. It is located in the building that also houses Career Link on West 8th Street in downtown Erie.
The state is considering closing the center to cut costs. If that happens, applicants would have to use the Pittsburgh office.
Councilman Bob Merski said, "Quite frankly it is an undue burden for our residents, our taxpayers to have to travel to Pittsburgh to take the test when we have a facility here and we have a use for it. There is a need for it. And I hope our state legislators fight to keep it here in Erie."
Opponents of the closing say about 5,000 people annually use the local office.
