Facelift for Shades Beach Boat Launch

Posted: Updated:

A big project is planned for this summer to improve the Shades Beach boat launch in Harborcreek Township.

Bids will be opened next month, with work expected to be finished by the end of the summer. The estimated price tag is between $400,000-$500,000.

The key goal is to stabilize the outer break wall. It has been undermined by wind, waves and ice. Crews will use layers of large rocks for reinforcement.

Improvements will also  make floating docks wider, heavier and more stable. Crews will try as much as possible to minimize the impact on boaters.

Harborcreek Supervisor Joe Peck said, "It is an extremely popular area, right off of Shades Beach with bass, perch and walleye fishing. So  it is used quite extensively. We're going to make it more user friendly and ADA compliant."

The township is paying for the project with money received in an out-of-court settlement over a dispute about the original design.
