Erie Police Warn Of Phone Scam

Posted: Updated:

Erie police are warning of a scam, where they say citizens are being asked to give money to a bogus organization.

Erie police say citizens have called them, reporting they got a call of someone soliciting money for an organization called "Cops and Rodders."

The caller is asking for donations, but police say it's not them.

In fact, the Erie FOP does not do any phone solicitation.

Erie police say it's a scam, and has nothing to do with their department, or any police department in Erie county.

The organizer of the event however, says that per court orders from 2012, the event advertises that it does not have any connection to the Erie FOP or other police agencies and is merely an event to recognize police organizations and raise funds for those that choose to be apart of it.

In two separate court hearings Erie judges ruled in favor of Bay City Enterprises that they have the right to use the name "Cops and Rodders" for its event as long as it does not advertise or promote the event to be apart of a police agency.
