County Council Votes Unanimously to Support Veterans Treatment Court

Posted: Updated:

Erie County Council voted unanimously to a support a Veteran's Treatment Court at Tuesday's meeting.

Family members of veterans spoke to the council, asking for more support for veterans, especially those who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder.

They say the new veteran's court is a necessary step in the right direction.

"I think it's shameful that we did not have it before. There are very specific issues that come home with deployment," said Cyndi Treiber, whose husband suffers from PDST and whose daughter suffers from secondary PTSD. "You're dealing with a lot of factors sometimes that contribute to getting in trouble. There are ways to handle that besides putting guys in jail," she said.

"I've had friends (veterans) that have been home and just don't know where to fit in, Treiber said. "I think it's going to be a huge help and I hope Erie really embraces it."

The court is in its planning phase and development plans will be headed by Judge Ernie Disantis.
