Lights, Sirens, Safety: First Public Safety Expo a Success

Posted: Updated:

This weekend at the Bayfront Convention Center was all about keeping the public safe when emergencies and disasters strike.

About 1600 spent their Saturday and Sunday with emergency officials at the 2014 Public Safety Expo, the first of its kind in the Erie area.

Those in attendance could learn how to be ready for any emergency through interactive  displays and demonstrations, from behind the scenes looks at rescue vehicles to the weapons police carry.

Those who keep us safe in Erie say the expo is a great way to show the community what they do.

"The kids love to come out here to see what we do and see our gear we have set up. We want to let them know to not be afraid and to come talk to us when we're out on the street," said John Nolan, of the Erie Police Department SWAT team.

The WICU and WSEE weather team was also there. Meteorologists Geoff Cornish, Julie Coates, and Katie McGraw teamed up to educate the public on severe weather preparations. One topic brought up, something people don't always think about when hearing the words "severe weather" - heat.

"The main problem when it comes to heat is that people aren't respecting it enough. They don't think of it as the leading cause of death, which it is. I think when people think of major killers, they think of hurricanes or tornados because they are such massive storms. And you have that one person who dies of heat, and it's not making as many headlines," said McGraw.

It's the first year for the Lights, Sirens, and Safety expo and organizers plan to bring it back next year.
