Shipyard Preparing for Major Construction Project

Posted: Updated:
Workers at DonJon Shipbuilding and Repair are busy. But soon they will get even busier. The company is gearing up for the second large new ship construction project in the past few years.
Right now workers are finishing emergency rudder repairs on a large Canadian ship, the Atlantic Huron. They are also doing a major renovation on an ocean-going tugboat and building a new small barge.
This summer, construction will start on a 600 foot, 185,000 barrel chemical barge. The project is expected to require about 70 additional employees.
DonJon General Manager John Witte said, "It allows us not only to continue to employ the 150 or so folks that are presently working with us, but  probably by the time we're at peak employment, we may have in the vicinity of 220. For the next year-and-a-half, starting around late July, we will be very busy."
The company also says a $5 million Port Authority dock wall repair project will give the shipyard more room to do repairs.
