Erie R.I.S.E In Danger of Losing Charter

Posted: Updated:
Leaders of the Erie R.I.S.E charter school spoke out, Thursday, for the first time since learning their charter could be revoked, by the Erie School District.

The school's board of trustees held their monthly meeting, Thursday night and opened it up to the public.

Carolyne Crawford was the only family member in attendance.  She drives her 2 granddaughters to Erie R.I.S.E for school, every morning.

"R.I.S.E Academy has taught them a lot, regardless of what anyone is saying," said Crawford.

About two weeks ago, the Erie School Board voted to take an issue of "non-renewal"; that decision follows a report issued by the state auditor general.

Poor academic performance, no oversight by the school's trustees, overcrowded classrooms and a major lack of discipline were all among issues, found in the audit.

Crawford said she disagrees with those allegations.  "I was upset about the news, I felt that everything was so fabricated," she said.

Trustees are ready to defend the charter school, before the Erie School Board.

"We're prepared to respond to each one of those allegations," said CEO and Founder of Erie R.I.S.E, Gregory Myers.  "There's no organization out there that's perfect, but we're moving forward," he said.
Myers said he's not worried about the school losing it's charter.  In fact, they've already started planning for next school year.

"Our plans are in place and we do plan on moving forward.  And we will certainly be open the next school year,' he said.

Erie R.I.S.E trustees present their case in front of the Erie School Board, on May 7th.  Myers expects parents and community members to come out in support of the school.
