Holocaust Survivor Arrives In Erie For Week-Long Engagement

Posted: Updated:
ERIE- Eight candles burned in a dimly lit auditorium at McDowell High School.

They were candles commemorating Yom Ha'Shoah Remembrance Day--the “Shoah” being the Holocaust where millions of Jewish people lost their lives.

"It’s the lessons learned during that dark period of our history that is so important," says Holocaust survivor Marion Blumenthal-Lazan.

Blumenthal was just four years old when her mother, father and brother spent a horrifying six years in both refugee and concentration camps.

“It was a dreadful time, something that you read in your history books but need to hear it firsthand."

Her family would eventually survive but the memories are crystal clear.

She recalls the day her family arrived at Bergen-Belsen, the same concentration camp where Anne Frank died.

“I weighed 35 pounds at the age of 11,” Marion says. “My mom weighed 60 pounds, so you can imagine what they fed us during that time. We were deathly sick.”

Hundreds of people would show up to learn more about Marion's story Sunday night, including 8th grader Brianna Mitchell.

Mitchell says learning about the Holocaust from a textbook just doesn't amount to meeting someone who lives to tell about it.

“I think it is so amazing that we still have a Holocaust survivor with us today,” Mitchell says. “We can still tell her story to our kids and to our generation coming up

Marion travels all over the country sharing her story to young people.

Even writing a book called "Four Perfect Pebbles," a game she’d play as a young girl to try and find matching pebbles. If she found them, her family would survive.

Erie's Jewish Community Center donated 700 copies of Marion's book. They'll be given to six local schools where Marion is scheduled to visit this week.

They are the last generation that will hear this first hand and someday these young people will have to be a witness.”
