Breaking the Rules on Recycling

Posted: Updated:
Erie County officials are getting frustrated with people who are not following recycling rules.

The county has four  sites in rural areas for people to drop-off recyclable items.  Most people abide by the rules on what items can be placed in the collection bins. Some do not because the sites are not supervised.
One site is located at the municipal building in Washington Township. Township Manager David Anthony is amazed with what he sees there.
"Car bumpers, mattresses, microwave ovens, coffee makers, couches, chairs.   You name it, we've had it here," he said.
The county must pay a fee to Waste Management every time non-recyclable items are taken out of the bins and shipped to the landfill.  However, the county has no plans, at this time, to make changes at the sites.
