Erie Neighborhood Watch Vows To Help Crack Down On Violent Crime

Posted: Updated:
A violent weekend in the city, as Erie police were kept very busy, with lots of gun calls.
At least 4 people were shot in a matter of 2 days.

Erie police are upping patrols, and pushing for funding to come in ahead of the summer months, for those patrols.
And the county's neighborhood watch council is also vowing to step up.

The most recent report of shots fired came around 8:00 Sunday night, in the area of east 6th and Ash streets.
Shortly after, two people showed up to the hospital with bullet wounds, but actually left without receiving treatment.

Earlier Sunday, police got another report of gunfire around east 21st and Wayne street.
In this case, a man reportedly drove by and opened fire from inside a car, hitting a home with bullets.

Overnight, a man was shot in the groin outside of Juliet's Gentleman's Club along west 8th street.
And, a man was shot on Saturday, near east 7th and Ash.

Four people shot, lots of bullets flying, in just a matter of days.
These incidents have the new neighborhood watch chairman, Steven Simmelkjaer, upset and vowing for change.
After a complete revamping of the Erie Neighborhood Watch Council, he says their goal is to come up with solid ways to make a real impact in the community.

"We're looking for solutions. We know that gun violence, just like drug peddling and drug using are symptoms of the real issue. We have to find solutions in our community and then certainly address that," said Simmelkjaer.

The new council is having a meeting this Tuesday night, to go over their plans and ways to help police combat violent crime.
Anybody involved in any watch group, watch coordinators throughout in the county are encouraged to attend.
It's at the Blasco Library starting at 6:30 Tuesday night.
