Consumer Activist to National Fuel: "Give Customers A Break"

Posted: Updated:
A local consumer activist is asking National Fuel to reconsider its latest rate hike.

Ken Springirth says National Fuel is making enough money that it does not need to ask for a hike.  Effective tomorrow, the company will raise its rates   7.3 %. That means the typical customer will pay an extra $5.55 a month, from $75.84 to 81.39.  The company is passing on the costs it has been paying to buy fuel from its suppliers.

Springirth says the hike is unnecessary.  He cited National Fuel's annual report, which the company claimed a income of $82 million in the last quarter of 2013.
"They've done an outstanding job from the management standpoint.   But my appeal to them today is to please, sharpen your pencils.   Now is the time to cancel that increase." he said.

National Fuel says it chose not to impose a rate hike last winter, when it would have had a profound effect on many customers.  But, the company says the hike is needed now because of supply and demand.
