New Effort to Push for Universal Pre-K Education

Posted: Updated:
A new bi-partisan campaign kicked off today to push for universal access to pre-k education in Erie and around the state.
The local chairmen for PRE-K for PA are businessman Nick Scott, Jr. and lawyer Ron DiNicola. They said there are more than 4,000 children ages 3-4 in Erie County not enrolled in pre-k, primarily because of financial reasons.
The new campaign will work to convince state government that funding pre-k programs for all children is a priority that needs to be addressed. DiNicola said, "Children achieve 90% of their development by age 5. As a consequence, if they don't have the exposure to language, literacy, math, social development at an earlier age, by the time they get to kindergarten they are on the outside of the circle."
Scott said, "We are going to push this with the elected officials. We are going to push this with the candidates in the upcoming election and hope that they make this a number one priority."
The estimated cost of providing pre-k education to all 3-4 year olds in the state is about $1 billion.
