New campaign aims to increase motorcycle safety awareness and make New Jersey's roads safer for everyone

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J., May 5, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition and support of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey (BIANJ) is aiming to make New Jersey's roadways safer for motorcyclist and drivers with the launch of it's Motorcycle Safety Awareness campaign. Funded by the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (NJDHTS), the campaign starts May 1 and runs throughout the year.

The Voice of Brain Injury in New Jersey Since 1981.

According to NJDHTS, 741 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in New Jersey between 2002 and 2011.  There are about 2,500 crashes that involve motorcyclists each year in the state.  "Driver inattention" is consistently listed as one of the most frequent causes of motorcycle crashes.

"The motorcycle safety awareness campaign works in two ways," says BIANJ's President and CEO, Barbara Geiger-Parker.  "It reminds drivers to be aware and respectful of the rights of all who share the roads, particularly those of motorcyclists, while also encouraging riders to use proper safety equipment and training."

The first initiative is the Share the Road Pledge campaign, which encourages drivers to do their part to save motorcyclists' lives and help make New Jersey's roads safer for everyone.  Motorists who take the Pledge will have a chance to win $50 in gas cards.  Winners will be selected randomly each week.  To learn more and take the Pledge online, go to:

The second initiative is the Ride2Win Pledge Campaign, which looks to the riding community to pledge to be a safe motorcycle rider.  Riders who take the Pledge will be entered to win a $250 cash reimbursement toward the purchase of a DOT-approved helmet, other protective gear, or the cost of New Jersey-certified motorcycle course.  Winners will be selected randomly each month.  To learn more and take the Pledge online, go to:

"As the calendar turns towards summer, we always see an influx of motorcycle riders on our roads, which means May is the perfect time to get everyone thinking seriously about motorcycle safety," said Division of Highway Traffic Safety Acting Director Gary Poedubicky. "The one message we repeat constantly to motorists is that they should share the road with motorcyclists. By being cognizant of those on motorcycles, we'll reach our goal of making the roads as safe as possible for all."

Additional prize sponsor for both programs is Rider Insurance.

Established in 1981, the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is a statewide nonprofit organization that services more than 10,000 individuals annually through its family support, advocacy, and education and prevention programs.  Over the last 30 years, BIANJ has brought together people with brain injury, their families and friends, and concerned allied health professionals to improve the quality of life people experience after brain injury.  For more information, please visit
