Council Looking At Demolition Delay Plan

Posted: Updated:
Erie City Council today asked city lawyers to look into a possible rule to impose a waiting period before certain buildings can be demolished. The bill would mandate a 30 day waiting period for owners getting a permit to tear down a building in an historic district.
And it would notify the  Erie County Historical Society, Preservation Erie and the closest neighborhood watch group or association about the plan.
City Councilman Dave Brennan said, "I think having more of an opportunity to talk with people who know preservation and real estate, they would be able to offer to purchase the property, rehabilitate the property and just find ways to reuse the property."
The vote by council came in the wake of the demolition of two historic homes in recent months.
