A high speed chase, like one that occurred in Erie this morning, is something in which every patrol officer must be prepared to handle. Training takes place even before some officers begin their careers.
Cadets from the Mercyhurst Municipal Police Academy are receiving drivers training this week. The instruction is taking place at Lake Erie Speedway.
The cadets are learning steering and braking maneuvers that will be valuable during a chase. They also are learning basic things, such as how to safely round corners and curves, and exercises for backing up a police cruiser.
"This is actually the first time we've been outside the classroom. So all of us are really excited to be finally outside doing hands-on stuff," said Cadet Tony Phillips.
The cadets are scheduled to graduate from the academy on June 20.
