Erie's VA Medical Center Responds To Scandal Affecting National VA Centers

Posted: Updated:
A health care scandal is unfolding in the Veteran's Administration, with reports that some of our military veterans have been ignored, neglected, under-treated, and mistreated, with sometimes fatal consequences.

It's sparking audits of veterans hospitals across the country, including here in Erie.

But while there's a lot of controversy unfolding about other VA medical centers, those at Erie's VA Hospital say veterans are receiving quality care.

The scandal stems from allegations that as many as 40 veterans died, waiting up to a year and a half for appointments at the va hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.
There are also allegations that records were falsified at several va medical centers, in an effort to improve performance records.

But at Erie's VA Hospital, they say their most important mission is to make sure veterans know that they're here to care for them, and provide the high-quality care and benefits they've earned and deserve.
In fact, Sarah Gudgeon, Public Affairs Specialist with Erie's VA Hospital says they welcome any audits and reviews to ensure veterans are getting the best care possible.

"We've put a lot of resources into expanding access to care and I'm really proud to say that we are able to offer access appointments every single day to veterans who do need to be seen," said Gudgeon. "It might not be with their primary care provider, but we do have same day access every day Monday through Friday," Gudgeon added.

There's no exact time set for the review in Erie, Gudgeon says it'll likely happen within the next several weeks, as ordered by the veteran's affairs secretary.
