Nearly one thousand undergraduates and grad students received degrees at Edinboro University's commencement on Saturday. The 738 undergrads made it one if the university's largest graduating classes.

Edinboro also bestowed an honorary doctorate on former Homeland Security Secretary and PA governor, Tom Ridge.

Ridge gave the new graduates some advice on tackling the next chapter with the best foot forward.

"The competition is global now. We're competing with the best and brightest from countries around the world, and we just have to accept that challenge," Ridge said. "I think if we're willing to do that, we'll succeed. We're a very competitive nation by nature. We like to win, and one of the best ways to start winning is to get a good college degree from a good school, as many of these good young men and women did from Edinboro today," he said.

The community viewed the large graduating class as a positive sign for the university.

"They're getting more students from different places and I think it's really good and we're starting to branch out and become more well-known as a university," said Katie Kelly, a speech and hearing grad from Edinboro.

Above all, the day was about the graduates.

"A lot of hard work, a lot of perseverance, and it's a good feeling. I can move forward with life," said Patrick Daugherty, a new philosophy degree holder.

The ceremony for the 189 master's anad post-graduate degrees was held in a separate ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
