Rail Terminal Opponents Speak Out After Project Halted

Posted: Updated:
Opponents of that proposed rail terminal in Harborcreek are relieved with yesterday's decision by DevelopErie to stop the project.
Many businesses and homeowners had voiced opposition to the idea of a terminal along Walbridge Road between Buffalo Road and Iroquois Avenue.
The big fear was congestion, and the impact of heavy truck traffic.
Stan's Garden Center is one business located very close to the proposed site. Owners say they are very relieved. They had worried the negative impact on their business would be significant.
Josh Skarzesnski of Stan's Garden Center said, "If there is a line of trucks out there, my fear was that it would deter peole from wanting to come here to shop."
DevelopErie says it is possible another site for the project could be chosen in the future. But for now, the rail terminal project has been halted. DevelopErie President-CEO John Elliott said, "This had deep implications for Erie, long term. But it is hard to assess what it means right now."
