Derek Clark and Melissa Williams were hanging outside of her apartment near West 26th and Poplar Streets on Sunday night, when they witnessed the crash.
"When the couple were coming from the Knights of Saint John parking lot, trying to cross the street to come into the club, he swiped them so hard from the side, that they bounced into the side of the truck." said Williams.
The two then ran up to help the injured couple.
"You could instantly tell it was bad," said Clark. "The gentleman...he was conscious. But his wife, she wasn't moving at all."
One of the pedestrians, identified as 66-year-old Laura Luce of Erie, died from her injuries. A 67-year old man is in the hospital recovering. Police have not released his name. Police also haven't released the name of the 32-year-old male driver they took into custody, after doing a field sobriety test on him.
Williams says that she sees a lot of people speeding on the stretch of roadway along West 26th Street. Williams said this incident will serve as a grim reminder to drive safely.
"We just hope that people will wise up," said Williams. "When you see something like this happen, they'll understand this is what happens and this is how it affects the people that you've hurt in the process."
