Local Bar Damaged by Fire

Posted: Updated:
MILLCREEK - Investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a local bar, Thursday night.

The fire broke out just before 10:00 p.m. in the apartment above the Hi and Dri Pub on West Lake Road, in Millcreek Township.  Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from the building.

"I live right next door and my son called me, he thought our house was on fire," said Denise Saccamozonne, a neighbor who lives nearby.  "Then he looked out and saw the flames barreling and said, 'The Hi and Dri is on fire!'"

Initial reports said someone may have been in that second floor apartment, but a search of the upstairs came up empty.

"According to the manager of the bar, there is a gentleman who lives on the second floor," said Chief Rick Schau, of the Westlake Fire Department. "We were concerned that he was still home but our crews searched twice and found nothing," he said.

"We were worried that he was in there, because they kept coming out saying they didn't see anybody," said Saccamozonne.  "But then finally around 11:30, they said he was at work."

As for the pub, it has heavy smoke and water damage.

"The place is pretty iconic," said Jeremy Spicer, a nearby neighbor.  "If they can bring it back, that would be nice."

"It's sad because it's been here forever.  I hope they can rebuild," said Saccamozonne.

No word yet on what caused that fire.  We're told the man living in the upstairs apartment is being helped by the Red Cross.
