Volunteers Place Flags Around The City In Honor of Armed Forces Day

Posted: Updated:
Each year, hundreds of American flags are placed on the Donald Oaks Memorial Bridge in Harborcreek, all thanks to one local man.

"I'm a veteran myself and I used to cross this bridge on my way to work when I was working; the Donald Oaks Bridge, and I just thought it would be a nice thing to do in his memory," said Bob Boyd, a volunteer.

Oaks was a Harborcreek graduate, and the first soldier from northwestPennsylvaniaa to be killed in the Iraq War. For Boyd, hanging these flags is a way to show his thanks to Oaks and other troops for their service and sacrifices.

"Troops were mistreated when they came back from over in Vietnam because it was a very unpopular war and I just don't want them to think that we don't appreciate what they're doing now."

In all, over 140 flags will be displayed on the Donald Oaks Memorial Bridge, and with the help of volunteers, hundreds of others will be placed at five other locations across town.

"I do it to honor the veterans, the women and men that are out there fighting for us, and the ones that have come home, the ones that haven't come home, I get all choked up," said Carrie Roudybush, a volunteer.

Over the past three years he's been doing this, Boyd said he has received nothing but support from the community.

"A lot of times people will stop and maybe even give me a donation for the zip ties so that it doesn't all come out of my pocket," said Boyd. "The people that have tooted as they've gone by, that makes it worth while to know that people appreciate it."
