Ceremony Honors, Raises Funds for Flight 93 Memorial

Posted: Updated:
The Women's Club of Erie hosted an event today to help raise awareness for the heroes of Flight 93 and raise funds for the 9/11 memorial in Shanksville dedicated to those on the flight.

Mahlon Fuller, who was watch supervisor of air traffic control at Pittsburgh International Airport during 9/11,  spoke about the crew of Flight 93's last moments.

He focused on the struggle between the flight's crew members and terrorists in the moments before the crash.

The lecture was followed by a wreath laying ceremony at Erie's own 9/11 memorial outside the library.

"They made a plan, voted on it, they armed themselves with what they could, waited until they were over a rural area, and attacked the cockpit with the idea of trying to take the plane back," Fuller said. "Likely 5,000 people in our nation's capital were saved. If we don't memorialize what they did, they're lost to history."

The Women's Club has raised about $4,000 this year for the Flight 93 memorial.
