Erie Police Efforts To Recruit Minorities Reflect In Written Test Stats

Posted: Updated:
Nearly 200 Erie police hopefuls took one of the first steps to getting a job on the force this past weekend.
Saturday, the city held the Erie police department's written exam.
And it looks like the city's efforts to recruit more minorities, have made an impact.

For years, the city of Erie has been trying to recruit more minority officers.
And after this weekends police testing, it appears those extra efforts are helping.

Right now, out of 173 members of the Erie police department, there are only 4 African American police officers on the force.
So, Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers decided to step up their efforts to recruit more minority officers, increasing diversity on the force.

Two of the city's African American officers, Thomas Lenox and William Bailey, have been working over the past several months, recruiting minorities at places like job fairs, sporting events, and other venues.
"I can tell by their interactions with the candidates the day of the test that they had made a favorable impression," said Chief Bowers. "And that's what we needed them to do, and will continue to try these efforts into the future," Chief Bowers added.

Out of the 191 people who took the written test Saturday, 18 were black males, 4 were black females,  there were 15 white females, and one hispanic.

Chief Bowers says that's an improvement, in their efforts to make the department more reflective of the Erie community, "Anybody in their right mind would agree that your police department should reflect the content of your community, and it can only help with relationships within in the community," said Chief Bowers. "So that's one of our goals and we're going to keep pushing towards that," Bowers added.

Chief Bowers all around it was a good turnout, and a lot of good candidates took the test Saturday.

The next step is the physical agility test, which is set for June 28th.
