Erie Rib Fest Kicks Off Downtown Summer Events

Posted: Updated:
Downtown Erie's annual Wild Rib Cook Off and Music Festival is well underway.
It marks the start of  lots of summer events in Erie.
But with an increase in gun crime in the city recently, how are police making sure it's safe?

Over the next 4 days, thousands of people will visit downtown Erie, to check out the vendors, try some ribs, enjoy the weather.
And police will do their part to make sure they're safe while doing it.

The Wild Rib Cookoff in downtown Erie is the start of many events and festivals on Erie's summer events calendar.
From weekly block parties, bike nights, to Celebrate Erie.

And at all of those events, a private company handles security. Many off-duty Erie police officers and sheriffs deputies work during the events, along with security guards at night.
With an increase in gun violence recently, some may be concerned.

But, Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers assures the public that summer events like this Rib Fest, will be safe.
On-duty officers will also be paying special attention to Perry Square during the next several days.

The city is encouraging people to come downtown, have a good time.

"It'll be safe down here," said Chief Bowers. "We'll have officers dedicated to the park and it'll be a zero tolerance with misbehavior downtown. We're not going to let anybody come and ruin a good public event," Bowers added.

Chief bowers says over the past several years at events like this they've been very lucky as to not have anything major happen. They believe that'll be the same this year.
