LECOM Graduates Record Number of Students

Posted: Updated:
The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine said goodbye to its largest graduating class ever during Sunday’s commencement ceremony at the Erie Insurance Arena.

Nearly 600 students from the School of Osteopathic Medicine and the School of Pharmacy received their degrees, including more than 100 graduating from its satellite campus at Seton Hill University.

"This is sort of a landmark day for LECOM because it's the first time we're having a combined graduation in one ceremony,” said Michael Visnosky, the chairman of the LECOM Board of Trustees.

LECOM is one of the top medical schools in the nation, providing rigorous doctoral programs for students in the area and around the United States since 1992. Faculty members are excited to see the graduates move on to bigger and better things.

"It's a great celebration to be able to put so many professionals into the workforce, into residency programs, and to further the excellent healthcare in the region and the nation,” said Hershey Bell, M.D., Dean of School of Pharmacy.

Thirty-two graduates call Northwestern Pennsylvania home, including Dan Healy, of Cambridge Springs. He says having a medical school in his backyard was one of the reasons he chose LECOM.

"I think it's very important. It definitely helped being from the area, knowing the area,” Healy said.

While today is a very exciting day for the hundreds of graduates, some are even more excited to begin their careers.

"I'm going to Ft. Myers, Florida,” said Healy. “I got a job through Walgreens, so I'll be working as a retail pharmacist."

"I'm going to Michigan for OB, OB/GYN, for four years, a four-year residency," said Hebeeb Bello, a graduate of the School of Medicine.

A similar ceremony for LECOM’s branch campus in Bradenton, Fla., will be held next weekend.
