Venango Tanker Fire Injures Driver, Zaps Power

Posted: Updated:
A firey accident in Venango County Monday afternoon threatened the life of a truck driver, zapped power to the area, and closed down part of State Route 27.

A burned out shell of a truck was all that remained after an 18 wheel tractor-trailer tanker flipped. It happened when the driver failed to negotiate a left hand turn.

The truck rolled, and burst into flames on Route 27, six miles West of Titusville.

It created a dangerous scenario for the driver, who was trapped inside for an entire hour before rescue crews could safely get him out.

He was taken to Meadville Medical Center by ambulance.

Responders faced several challenges when attempting their rescue.

"You've got 25,00 3000 gallons of gasoline burning there, it's gonna be a hot fire," said Samuel Firster, the Chief of the Chapmanville Fire  Department.

"The tank had already ruptured so we didn't have to worry about it, but you do have tires blowing, that type of stuff, things popping, cracking, so the main thing was to keep the cab cool and rescue the driver," he said.

The crash also ignited a utility pole and cut power to the surrounding area.

Route 27 was closed for many hours after the crash for clean up.
