Policy Change Allows Mercyhurst University Police Officers To Carry Weapons

Posted: Updated:
Mercyhurst University police officers will soon be allowed to carry weapons.
That decision comes after years of debate on-campus.

WICU & WSEE took an in-depth look at the issue back in November.
And now, a big change is ahead for the police department at Mercyhurst University.

After a series of college campus shootings across the nation, we did an in-depth report on the debate over whether campus police officers should be armed.

We found that Mercyhurst University is the only college or university in Erie county that does not allow their officers to carry weapons.
But now, the board of trustees has just voted to change that policy, "It's not something we're excited to do," said Laura Zirkle, Vice President of Student Life. "It's not something we're happy that we're in a situation where this is what make the most sense to do. I'm sorry we live in a world where this is the step that we have to take. I never thought we'd see armed officers in elementary schools, high schools, or colleges," Zirkle added.

Mercyhurst Police Chief Robert Kuhn says this policy change is a positive one, "Because they're sworn officers, you're putting on a uniform and a badge and giving them arrest powers and by law an officer does not have to retreat from a dangerous situation," said Chief Kuhn. "He's supposed to stand his ground, protect the innocent and protect himself, and in our situation we couldn't do that," Chief Kuhn added.

This decision comes after years of consideration on campus, as well as an incident last September, where a gunman walked onto Mercyhurst's main campus, and shot and killed himself.
That incident brought the on-going debate to the forefront.

The officers are already ACT-120 certified, but will have to be re-qualified and go through more testing and training before they're armed.
The policy is set to go into effect in the next spring term.
