Union City Community Foundation Honors Local Doctor, Awards Grants

Posted: Updated:
UNION CITY -- A local doctor was honored for his contributions and six of the city's non-profits were awarded grants at the Union City Community Foundation's annual dinner on Monday night.

Each year, the foundation picks one person, or non-profit, for the "I Believe" award.

"The 'I Believe' award is for a citizen in the town who has always believed in Union City, and has always given as much as he can to the community," said Steve Jones, chairman of the foundation.

This year's recipient is Dr. Rogelio "Roger" Allanigue, an internal medicine physician, who came to Union City 41 years ago.

"It's really very sup rising, and an honor and privilege," Allanigue said. "You don't think about those things, just doing your job."

But he's given back in ways beyond just keeping the city's citizen's healthy.

"Seeing a need for higher education, he thought the Union City High School seniors should be so deserving. What did he do? He and his family started a scholarship fund," said Ronald Jones, a long-time friend of Allanigue's.

The honoree also sponsors a little league team, serves on the Union City Hospital's board, and played a role in keeping the hospital open when it was in danger nearly forty years ago.

The Union City Community Foundation also granted more than $21,000 dollars in funding to area non-profits, one of which will help create a new radio station for the borough.

"We start broadcasting this summer on 96.7 WSFN, we're really happy and really excited about it," said Dave Robinson, executive director of the Family Support Center in Union City. "We're really going to try something different. We're going to be marketing ideas and values to the community," he said.

The radio station received $7,000 in funding will be run by center and broadcast educational programming, high school sports, and local music, to name a few.

Five other non profits received grants as well, including Union City Pride, the Historical Society and Museum, the middle/high school, the city's ambulance service, and Camp Halo.

"It could be helping out the youth in town, it could be building a new gazebo in town. The Union City Community Foundation has helped support the infrastructure of the town and the area," Jones said.

The Foundation is supported by private donations that go towards its endowment. Dividends paid on those invested donations generate the funds each year that can be allocated to local non-profits and scholarships for college-bound students.
