Four Rescued from Wintergreen Gorge

Posted: Updated:
Three kids and one adult needed rescuing on Thursday evening after getting stuck on a cliff face in Wintergreen Gorge near Penn State Behrend.

A group of seven, five of them kids, were hiking when the rain started.

"When it started raining, they decided to take a shortcut up the cliff embankment to get their way out," said Kevin Tobin, fire chief of Brookside Fire Company.  "They had made it up to the ledge and with the rain and the shale, the ledge got so slippery they couldn't go any further."

Three of the five kids got stuck - one of the kids, just four years old. An adult turned back to help, and he got stuck too.

Rescuers say the climb would've been difficult even on a dry day.

"It was a pretty straight up and down haul normally. Without socks and shoes, and two kids didn't have them on, they would've never made it up there, even on a good day," said Charles Davis of the Kearsarge Fire Department.

The victims were pulled up 50 feet, in harnesses and stokes baskets. The good news, no injuries aside from a few scrapes and bruises.

"Since they did get caught in the storm, we were worried about hypothermia with the patients. But they were all checked out here on scene and none of them will require further treatment," Tobin said.

The location can be dangerous for hikers and the rescuers. Davis says the rain increases dangers ten-fold.

"We've been in this particular spot several times, it's very steep, very rocky, we have to worry about cutting our rope, cutting the patient, and our rescuers," he said.

It's the second rescue in that portion of Wintergreen Gorge within two weeks.
