ERIE, PA (WICU-WSEE) -- A new phone scam is posing as the IRS, and has now even targeted a local detective.
Ken Merchant, Detective Lieutenant with the Erie Police Department, says that he had received calls about this scam before becoming a target himself.
Some of the characteristics of this particular scam include a “202” area code, a heavy accent, and asking for specific money.
Ken tells us, “it only take a couple people to make this very profitable to them.”
One tip to keep in mind is that the IRS would never ask for you credit card information over the phone, and typically would contact you by mail. If you have an questions to the legitimacy of a claim you can contact the IRS directly.
Should you encounter a call, the best thing to do is simply hang up and inform law inforenforcement
