Enrollment Number at Porreco College Almost at Quota

Posted: Updated:
There's been a lot of fanfare about the Porreco College since last March.  That's when Edinboro University announced it would offer university-level classes in Erie at community college prices.  But,  with all the fanfare, have students actually been applying to the school?

When Edinboro University announced last march that it would create the Porreco College, the university said it would have 150 students when classes start in August. Right now, 102 students have been accepted.

The Porreco College is located on West 38th street in Millcreek.  It's Edinboro University's solution to the problem of Erie County not having a community college. Full-time students will receive $3000 a year scholarships.  Part-time students will receive pro-rated scholarships. The scholarships would bring the cost of classes at the Porreco College on the same level as a community college.

Edinboro officials have been busy getting the word out to prospective students.  Open houses are held every Wednesday.  The university is also going out into the community.

"Representatives of Porreco College and Edinboro University spent a lot of time doing outreach in the community, speaking to organizations, doing outreach at locations like the Erie Housing Authority and the Multi-Cultural Resource Center.   We know that there are a lot of people out there who's lives can really be transformed by the opportunity we offer here," said Jeffrey Hileman, EUP Director of Communications.

Classes are scheduled to begin at the Porreco College on August 25.  Because interest has been high, the school will most likely go over the 150 student quota that was originally announced.

During the first year, associate degree classes will be offered in Business Administration, Applied Technology, Human Services, and Cultural Studies. A certificate program in Customer Relations Management is also available.
